If You Love Me Then Obey My Commands Says Jesus and God

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (New King James Version) 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

I ma not sure about you, but it seems conditional that if we are to love the LORD our God, then we must obey His voice. This is both his voice in His commands and this is also His voice as the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts.

The LORD God is purposely seeking those that will honour Him with more then their lips but will wholeheartedly seek Him and obey Him in their day to day walk on this earth. Jesus puts it another way.

John 14:21 (New King James Version) 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.

Jesus says quite clearly here that its only those people that have His Commands and obeys them that love Him. He goes on to say that those that are obedient to His Commands will be loved by Him and His Father.

I thought we were all loved by Jesus and the Father?

This verse seems to say that there is a deeper love reserved for those that are obeying the commands of Jesus. Jesus promises also that those that obey Him will actually know Him better in a more deeper way and that is what He describes as manifesting Himself to them. Of course Jesus could turn up in a dream or vision and further manifest Himself to us.

Is this a works doctrine?

No, these are simply the LORDS words and Jesus' words. I leave it with you whether you choose to obey or not!

Here are some more scriptures to consider:

John 3:36 (RSV)

He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests on him.

and:

1 John 2:3-6 (New King James Version)

3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
