Incest; The crime of cohabitation or sexual commerce between persons related within the degrees wherein marriage is prohibited by law.
Incest is generally something regarded with absolute distaste and more often than not those engaging in it are shunned by society.
Yet, in the world of immortal vampires, it seems common courtesy.
Is it acceptable? Is it even true?
The answers to both questions is a wholehearted yes. There are some that would argue that answer, but I intend to prove they're right.
First of all, what is important to know is vampire families usually don't consist of people who were born to the same mortal family. Whereas yes, the offspring are called childe, and the lot of them are siblings and hell, even where the sire is called 'mother' or 'father'; they are not family in the true meaning of the word.
They don't share the same DNA, the same birthparents or even the same history.
They are usually strangers when invited into the world of Darkness, and have to learn to get along and interact the way a family would.
Because there's usually a variety in people that are brought into the family it's easier to get attached. Most are first alone, and step by step get acquainted with those around them. It creates a bond just by having those first shared little steps.
Then of course, vampires are beautiful by nature, seductive, it is only logical that a partner is found within the vampire existence.
It's even more logical to think that this partner will be discovered in the family line itself; those are, after all, the people you spent the most time with.
They grow closer, intimate, then end up as partners for hopefully the rest of their unlife.
That, above all, is the dream of near every immortal; to not be alone, to have that life partner, a soul mate.
If you look at things from this perspective it's easy to argue that although they have a family set up, it's not incest because they aren't actual relatives.
Their blood all eventually leads back to a tie with the sire, but that is all that binds them as such. They don't look alike and haven't had the struggles of raising each other, or even so much as growing up together.
Yes, they still learn things, but ultimately those things are expansion of knowledge, and no basics to life itself.
Therefore, when asked if vampires practice incest the answer is a wholehearted 'no'. They're not a family in the true essence of the word, they merely live under the same roof and fight for each other, and sometimes with. For all the world it looks like a family, but that is only because they choose to be like that and not because they are.
Perhaps, this is something you'd like to consider yourself, or see with your own eyes within the vampire community. Who knows... you may disagree with me, or you may find yourself wholeheartedly agreeing.
