How Deep Is Your Love For God?

In the 1970's the Bee Gees had a hit song, "How Deep Is Your Love?" How often do we think of how deep God's love is for us? His love for us runs so deep that he gave us his Son so that we can spend eternity with Him. As believers, we are part of God's family. His love runs so deep, He calls us His children. The depth of God's love for us is impossible to measure with our minds.

The question we should be pondering is how deep is our love for God? How do we measure that love? The words Jesus spoke in John 14:15 are very clear. "If you love me, you will obey what I command." God measures our love for Him by our obedience to His word. How are we measuring up?

Love is more than a flowery word. Love is a choice and an action word. It is a commitment from our hearts that we will obey God's commands. Making this commitment, how do we conduct ourselves? James tells us we must be doers of the word. By obeying God's commands and carrying them out to the best of our ability, we show the world who we love.

When we study and live God's word, He reveals Himself to us. Executing God's commands, our relationship with Him will take on an added dimension. As we draw closer to God, we are capable of creating an intimate relationship with Him. Love for Christ and keeping His commands are inseparable.

When we go into a restaurant to eat, before we order we review the menu. We choose our food based on different criteria. What we like or do not like, time of day, cost and other personal preferences. When it comes to God's word and being committed to God is there a choice? Our love for God should run so deep that we do not even think about choices. Throughout the Psalms, we read how these men loved and thirsted for God's commands. It was a pleasure for them to have His laws. They lived for God's commands. His laws were part of their existence.

Jesus knew His Father's commands and loved Him so much that He was always obedient. Jesus always did what pleased His Father. In John 14:21 Jesus tells us if we have His commands, and obey them, then we are showing our love for Jesus. When we show our love for Jesus, we are showing we love His Father.

It is not a matter of what commands we will obey. It is a matter of being like Jesus and obeying every command.

There is a saying in poker "I'm all in." It means, a player pushes all his chips into the betting pot. He is wagering he has the best hand at the table. Do we go all in when it comes to obeying God's commands? We know how deep God's love is for us. How deep is our love for Him?
